Spelling:
The fifth grade spelling words and activities come from a book published by Modern Curriculum Press. This spelling program teaches spelling skills based on phonics. Each classroom will handle spelling assignments differently but all students will be given a spelling test on the week’s words.
Vocabulary:
In the fifth grade, vocabulary is taught using extensive academic vocabulary in all subject areas. Students are expected to use good vocabulary in speaking and writing in all classes. Students are expected to study these words to match them with their definition.
Grammar:
In the fifth grade, students work on skills to improve their use of proper writing mechanics (apostrophes, quotation marks, commas, paragraph indentations) and correct sentence structure (elimination of sentence fragments and run-ons). Conventions are reinforced through various written assessments across subject areas. In addition, fifth graders will continue toork on mastering the eight basic parts of speech (nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections).
Each student will have access to copies of a grammar packet from various programs including Houghton Mifflin. We also have a reference book, Houghton Mifflin’s Write Source Handbook. This text has sections on all the grammar skills covered in the fifth grade.
