MATH FUN
In fifth grade, students develop a rich mathematical vocabulary and learn how to communicate their thinking and reasoning about mathematics in pictures, numbers, and words. Instructional activities include teacher-led lessons, note taking, independent work, games, and partner/small group activities. In the classroom, we support your child’s mathematical learning with mathematical discussions about different strategies, and we use manipulatives, visual aids, and posters rich in math vocabulary. A.P.S. is employing a new edition of TERC Mathematics for the fifth grade math curriculum. The units include:
Operation and Algebraic Thinking:
· Write and interpret numerical expression
· Analyze patterns and relationships

Number Operations in Base Ten:
· Understand place value system
· Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths.
Number Operations in Fractions:
· Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions
· Apply and extend previous understanding of multiplication and division to multiply and
divide fractions.
Measurement and Data:
· Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system
· Represent and interpret data
· Geometric measurement- understand concepts of volume and related volume to
multiplication and addition
Geometry:
· Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real world and mathematical problems
· Classify 2-D and 3-D figures into categories based on properties
There is nightly homework that allows students to practice skills. In addition, computational math skills will be taught through a variety of worksheets and activities. It is imperative that students master the multiplication facts through the tens. They also need to practice these skills often to be able to fully participate in the 5th grade curriculum. Students’ math skills will be assessed through regular tests, quizzes, and projects.
