Writing
Pay Fifth graders learn how to become better writers through the Lucy Calkins Writing Workshop program (more on the author) as this takes students through the writing process. 5th graders will be responsible for writing three pieces using the Lucy Calkins model. They will write a literary essay, an opinion essay, and an informational essay. (Arlington's required writing)
Besides writing during Language Arts, writing assignments are often integrated with our literature, social studies, and science curriculum.
Students will have many opportunities to edit and share their writing with their peers. Sometimes, fifth graders are expected to integrate learned skills into their writing and edit independently to the best of their ability. This helps them to develop a sense of ownership and increase their personal responsibility for writing well. Chromebook computers are used to write class assignments and students will also use the Internet (under adult supervision) for research.
Research Project and Research Writing: Students will generate a research topic, and execute research. They will learn to distinguish relevant sources from irrelevant sources and prioritize information. For research writing, they will compose information to adequately explain a topic using their research as evidence. They will proceed through the writing process with a conference with the teacher. Students are expected to independently revise or edit based on the teacher feedback.
