History/Social Studies
The purpose of the fifth grade social studies curriculum is to give students their first concentrated study of the formative years of United States history. Students will review of geography and map skills. They will then learn about the enslavement of Africans and how their lives were controlled by those in power, the white European colonists. We will look at the economic practices and our beliefs of freedom. Fifth graders will also learn about the development of democratic institutions and ideas in the United States, from the events that led to the Revolutionary War and the independence of the original thirteen colonies to the formation of a national government under the U.S. Constitution.
The Social Studies curriculum predominantly uses the text, Social Studies Alive! America’s Past. The goals of this curriculum are to make elementary social studies engaging for all students, to develop students’ literacy skills in the content area, to help students succeed on district, state, and national assessments, and to inspire students with memorable activities based on Common Core standards. The textbook, written at grade level, builds social studies and academic vocabulary, and enhances student comprehension with engaging, instructional images.
After every chapter, students will take an assessment. These assessments encourage students to use their various intelligences to demonstrate their understanding of key concepts while preparing them for future standardized tests. To prepare for tests, students should review the materials in their social studies notebooks, papers, and study guides. Due to the large amount of information and vocabulary covered in each chapter, we encourage students to start studying as soon as an assessment is announced and not the night before. In addition, being present every day in class, actively taking part in all discussions and activities, asking for extra help when confused are all keys to success.
